About recall checks

Where does the recall data come from?

From NHTSA, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Manufacturers must file every US safety recall with NHTSA; we query its public Recalls API and cache answers for up to 24 hours.

Does this tell me if the recall was already repaired?

No. NHTSA publishes recalls per model and model year. Whether a campaign is still open on one specific VIN is shown only on nhtsa.gov/recalls and manufacturer sites, which each report links to.

What does "park it" or "park outside" mean?

Some recalls carry a manufacturer warning not to drive the vehicle, or to park it outside and away from buildings because of fire risk, until it is repaired. We flag those in red.

Are recall repairs free?

Yes. Under US law, safety recall repairs are free at a franchised dealer of that brand.
