GM RPO codes: how to read the SPID label
GM tags every engine, transmission, axle ratio, trim, paint color and feature with a three-character RPO code. Here is where a Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac or Buick lists its codes, how to read the label, and what 71 common codes mean, each checked against GM’s own documents.

What GM RPO codes are
RPO stands for Regular Production Option. GM’s body builder manuals describe the RPO list as the codes “that are available on the vehicle” and say the vehicle’s own RPO list is printed on the Service Parts Identification (SPID) label. Each code is three letters or digits: L87 is a 6.2L V8, GU6 a 3.42 rear axle ratio, Z71 the off-road chassis package.
The codes describe how the vehicle was built at the factory, which is why parts counters, body builders and buyers use them. They do not tell you anything about what happened to the vehicle since. Codes vary by model year and market, so treat the table below as a guide and check your own vehicle’s list.
Where the SPID label is
The SPID label is a paper sticker, usually in the glove box, the trunk or the spare tire area. GM’s owner’s manuals say it lists the VIN, the model designation, paint information and production options and special equipment, and ask owners not to remove it.
| Vehicle | Where GM says the label is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | On the inside of the glove box | Owner’s Manual |
| 2017 Chevrolet Malibu | In either the glove box or the trunk area | Owner’s Manual |
| 2017 Buick LaCrosse | In the spare tire compartment | Owner’s Manual |
| 2016 Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra | In the glove box | GM service bulletin 16-NA-156 |
| 2018 model year and later | Often no SPID label: the same information is in a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side B-pillar (door jamb) | GM bulletin 17-NA-213 |
From 2018, GM says much of the SPID information is a QR code on the certification label instead, phased in over several months. If the certification label has no QR code, the SPID label is in its usual location.
How to read the label or QR code
Paper label. After the VIN and model, the label prints rows of three-character codes. Each one is an RPO. Look them up in the table below, or in the RPO list in your vehicle’s service or body builder manual.
QR code (2018 and later). Any phone QR reader works. GM’s example scan returns the VIN, model year, model code, a date and then the RPO codes, separated by spaces. GM notes the scan does not include descriptions; they are in the service manual under General Information.
Window sticker. When GM’s window-sticker service has the VIN on file, the original sticker PDF carries the RPO codes in its text layer. They aren’t printed on the sticker, but you can search the PDF for a code or copy the codes out. GM doesn’t publish which model years include them. In our checks, 2022 to 2025 vehicles worked and a 2017 didn’t. Our Chevrolet build sheet page builds that link for your VIN.
Common GM RPO codes
Every code below appears in the RPO code list of at least one GM body builder manual (2025 Silverado and Sierra 1500, Silverado and Sierra HD, Express and Savana, and the 2023 Escalade). The source wording column is GM’s own description. Codes vary by model year and market, and a code that is listed here may not be offered on your vehicle.

Trim codes are the ones GM uses on these trucks, vans and SUVs; other GM models use other codes. We left out codes we could not match to a GM document.
Check the VIN too
An RPO list tells you how a vehicle left the factory. It does not show accidents, title brands or open recalls. Before you buy, decode the VIN, run the free recall check, and consider a history report.

FAQ
What does RPO stand for?
Regular Production Option. GM gives each option, package, engine, transmission, axle ratio and paint color a three-character RPO code, and its body builder manuals list the codes available for each vehicle line.
Where is the RPO code sticker on a Chevy or GMC truck?
On older trucks, inside the glove box: GM’s 2017 Silverado 1500 owner’s manual puts the Service Parts Identification label there. From the 2018 model year GM began moving that information into a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side B-pillar. If there is no QR code, GM says the SPID label is in its usual location.
Can I get RPO codes from the VIN?
Not from the 17 characters themselves: a VIN encodes the model, engine, model year and plant, not individual options. GM’s window-sticker service returns the original sticker PDF by VIN when it has one on file. The RPO codes are embedded in that PDF’s text layer, so you can search for them or copy them out, but they aren’t printed on the sticker. GM doesn’t publish which model years include them. In our checks, 2022 to 2025 vehicles worked and a 2017 didn’t. A GM dealer can also look the build up by VIN.
Why can’t I find a SPID label on my GM vehicle?
GM discontinued the separate SPID label on 2018 model year vehicles, phased in over several months, and moved most of its content into a QR code on the certification label. Scanning that QR code with a phone returns the RPO codes without descriptions.
Do RPO codes mean the same thing on every GM vehicle?
Many codes are shared across models and years, but each vehicle line has its own list and codes vary by model year and market. Check a code against the RPO list for your vehicle, which GM prints in the General Information section of the service and body builder manuals.
