BMW option codes (SA codes) explained
BMW gives every option a three-character SA code: 337 is the M Sport package, 322 Comfort Access, 610 the Head-Up Display. Here is what SA codes are, where to find your car’s, and what 42 common codes mean, each checked against BMW price lists.

What BMW SA codes are
SA is short for Sonderausstattung, German for optional equipment. In BMW’s German price lists, every option has a column headed “SA-Nr.”: 337 M Sport package, 3AC trailer hitch, 5AU Driving Assistant Professional. Paint colors get codes too, such as 300 Alpine White and 475 Black Sapphire.
Older codes are three digits; newer ones mix digits and letters. Many survive for years: 337 appears in BMW’s 6 Series Gran Coupé list from 2012 and in its 2026 X3 and 5 Series lists. Codes vary by model, model year and market, so a code here may not be offered on your car.
Where to find your BMW’s option codes
The 17-character VIN does not encode options. The option list sits in BMW’s records for the VIN, and there are three ways to see it:
- A BMW dealer can print the vehicle order and option list from the VIN.
- Free decoders run by enthusiasts list the factory SA codes for a VIN.
- Paid build-data reports are the fallback when the free decoders do not cover a car.
Our BMW build sheet page links to each route, with where the VIN is and the official recall lookup. Some decoders print extra characters around a code, such as an S in front; the three characters BMW uses in its price lists are the part to look up below.
Common BMW option codes
Each code below is printed next to the same item in at least one BMW price list for Germany published on the BMW Group PressClub (3 Series 2025, X3 2026, 5 Series 2023 and 2026, 6 Series Gran Coupé 2012). The BMW wording column is the German name from the list. Codes vary by model, model year and market.

The Head-Up Display (610) and alarm system (302) rows come from the 2012 list only. On newer models the same equipment may be standard or part of a package. We left out codes we could not match to a BMW document.
Check the VIN too
Option codes show how the car left the factory, not what happened to it since. Before you buy, decode the VIN, run the free recall check, and consider a history report.

FAQ
What is a BMW SA code?
SA stands for Sonderausstattung, German for optional equipment. BMW’s German price lists print a three-character “SA-Nr.” (SA number) next to every option, such as 337 for the M Sport package or 3AC for the trailer hitch.
What is BMW option code 337?
The M Sport package (M Sportpaket). It appears with the same code in BMW price lists from the 2012 6 Series Gran Coupé to the 2025 3 Series, 2026 X3 and 2026 5 Series. Newer lists add 33B, M Sport package Pro.
How do I find the option codes for my BMW?
The VIN does not encode options, but BMW’s records for the VIN do. A BMW dealer can print the vehicle order and option list, and free enthusiast decoders list the factory SA codes for a VIN. Our BMW build sheet page links to both.
Why do some BMW codes show an S in front?
Some third-party decoders and printouts show extra characters around the code, such as an S in front. BMW’s price lists print only the three-character SA number, which is the part to look up.
Do BMW option codes change by model and year?
Some do. Codes such as 337, 248 (heated steering wheel) and 300 (Alpine White) stay the same across models and years, while packages and paint colors come and go. Codes also vary by market, so check codes against your own car’s list.
